Madison Bowey: 2015-16 Season in Review

madison bowey hershey bears-1

Madison Bowey has all the qualities to be the complete package. At six-foot-two-inch, 210 pounds, he already has NHL size and plays with a physical edge to his game. Where he excels is on the offensive side of the puck. What Bears fans saw was a player much like former Bear Mike Green, a defenseman with a very offensive mind. Bowey has the ability to go deep into the offensive zone to help create plays on the offensive side of the puck very easily. Despite his size, he is an excellent skater with a heavy shot and good vision. He has played key roles in every step of his development and has only gotten better with the experience he gained his rookie season.

How he got here:
The Washington Capitals selected Bowey in the second round of the 2013 draft, fifty-third overall. Bowey came in from the WHL and the Kelowna Rockets, where he captained the Rockets to their fourth ever WHL title, and a Memorial Cup Finals appearance.

After a stellar regular season, Bowey was named the Bears top defenseman taking home the Milton Garland Memorial Award. The John Travers / Steve Summers Award for highest plus/minus during the regular season would also belong to Bowey for going +22 in 70 games this season. Along with leading the team in plus/minus, Bowey recorded four goals and 25 assists for 29 points, top among all Bears defenseman. Along with the 70 regular season games, Bowey found himself playing all 21 of the Calder Cup playoff games for Hershey, playing a total of 91 games this season.

Linemates:

The Winnipeg native found himself with multiple partners on the blue line during the season, including Joey Leach and Mike Moore, but the 21-year-old spent most of the season with Ryan Stanton. All three of those defensemen play a “stay at home” style, allowing the rookie defenseman make plays like he did on a gorgeous goal back in January against Lehigh Valley, a big spark to his season.

Memorable performance: First pro goal, October 25 vs. Hartford
