What Does the NHL’s Olympic Decision Mean for the American Hockey League?

Since the announcement made Monday afternoon by the National Hockey League that they will not include a stoppage in their 2017-18 season for the 2018 Olympics, speculation has begun on how national teams will fill their rosters for the twenty-third winter Olympiad. Many eyes have turned to the American Hockey League, the second highest level of professional hockey in the entire world.

With thirty teams, the league provides a developmental territory for players heading to the NHL, along with a place for veterans of the game to continue to play at a high level in North America.

Doug Yingst and Bryan Helmer Inducted into AHL Hall of Fame

Their names are synonymous with the great tradition of Hershey Bears hockey. Now their names are forever enshrined with the legends of the American Hockey League. Monday morning in Allentown, Doug Yingst and Bryan Helmer became the newest members of the American Hockey League Hall of Fame. Yingst’s career with the Bears began as a sales and promotions director. It ended when he retired last season after 34 years, completing his run as President and General Manager. His four Calder Cup championships as General Manager equals the most in league history.

Hershey Bears VP of Hockey Operations Bryan Helmer heads back to school every December along with his wife Pam. Pam is the co-author of a children’s book which uses hockey to teach valuable virtues to the young reader. “Hero’s Ho Ho Ho Hockey Dream” is a great holiday story with lots of fun and adventure. Bryan and Pam make a few school visits every December to be ambassadors for the game of hockey and teach the importance of learning to children across the local area.

Bryan Helmer Announced as Hershey Bears VP of Hockey Ops

An emotional Bryan Helmer, on the same day as his seventeenth wedding anniversary, was introduced as the new head man of the Hershey Bears Hockey Club. Helmer, 44, becomes the first ever former Bears player, captain, and coach to take over the franchise, as he follows the path laid out by another former defenseman, Frank Mathers.

“Now I get to call Hershey home,” Helmer said. “I have stability with this job where I don’t have to move every one to two years. My family is excited. They get to stay in one spot.

Jonas Siegenthaler Scores First AHL Point in First Game with Hershey

In Hershey’s historic 8-0 win last night over Lehigh Valley, the newest Hershey Bear Jonas Siegenthaler scored his first AHL point with an assist on Erik Burgdoerfer‘s second period goal.

“It was a good, high paced game,” the 18-year-old said after the win. “I really enjoyed to play with the Bears. It was a lot of fun.

“They’re great guys; they’re helping you all the time. I would not say [tonight] was easy, but since the team helps you a lot, it made [my first game] easier.”

Fox 43 Morning Crew Visits Giant Center to Preview Bears Season

Hershey Bears Release Video “We Will ROAR”

Just over one year after the Bears released their pump-up/promotional video “NO REST,” the Bears have dropped a new video. This commercial video is entitled “We Will ROAR” which includes awesome video from some of the best moments of the 75 years of Hershey Bears hockey. Some of the players you might recognize in the video include Mitch Lamoureux, Doug Gibson, Glen Seabrooke, Bob Bilodeau, Bryan Helmer, and many more. I don’t think you can watch this video and not be proud of how amazing of an organization we get to follow and watch.
